I recently wrote an article on how I sometimes complain to get free coupons. Today I want to talk about sending a compliment to get the same response. However, I want to make this point very clear. I will never send a compliment to a company unless I truly have something nice to say to them. The idea behind couponing, for me, isn’t trying to get over on a company by conjuring up angles for selfish financial gain. Once again, in my opinion, that is just bad karma. On the contrary, when I have something nice to say I say it. Then I politely ask if they might have coupons to offer the fans of their products. I also like to see if getting on their mailing list might be beneficial too as their promotional campaigns might have coupons attached. If it doesn’t get me a coupon then at least I sent one of my favorite companies a nice truthful letter that they can share with others who truly care about what the public thinks.
How I Was Able to Compliment to Get Coupons
This is a true story. My daughter loves 3 kinds of desserts: Chocolate Glazed Dunkin Donunt, Chocolate Cupcakes with Chocolate Frosting and the Ghirardelli Double Chocolate Brownie. Other than that I can’t entice her with any other goody. Ice cream, birthday cake or pie doesn’t make her budge. Yep, if you are a parent of small children, you feel my pain. I can’t even buy her a different donut from Dunkin Donuts or mix up another kind of brownie from Ghirardelli. She just doesn’t like it. So, I decided to write to Ghirardelli and pay them a compliment and ask for some coupons at the same time.
Here is what I wrote.
Hi I wanted to write to you to tell you that my daughter loves (ONLY) 3 types of desserts and the Ghirardelli Double Chocolate Brownie is 1 of the 3. In fact, she loves them so much I always have to pack up a brownie or 2 to take to with me to a birthday party so she can enjoy the sugary festivities. Anyway, I was wondering if you have any coupon offers for some loyal fans or if you could put me on your mailing list for upcoming promotions.
Please let me know.
Here is what they wrote back.

Their comment was absolutely great and totally made my day. The fact that Ghirardelli used the word “Wow” made it that much cooler. Anyway, A little honesty, truth and love goes a long way. And even though I might have gotten a coupon out of my kind gesture they might have gotten something a lot more: satisfaction knowing that they are making little girls happier across America 1 brownie at a time.
Ok maybe that is a stretch but they do make my daughter happy.
I think it’s important to tell companies how you feel. Compliments and complaints should be looked at as valuable information that is beneficial to making the market place a better place and to make companies the best they can be. I strive to do it honestly and when the moment calls for me to do it. I never go out of my way to contrive the situation as bad karma is something I am not interested in having in my life. However, my email, made, me, Ghirardelli and my daughter happier and so I am glad I reached out to them.
So, if you are up for it, send a compliment because if you ask me, my compliment made a win win win situation.
